2004 Z16 COMMEMORATIVE EDITION Z06 CORVETTE
Z06 PERFORMANCE SYSTEMS FEATURES
Aluminum Alloy Driveshaft
Four-Wheel Disc with ABS
A premium four-wheel disc brake system with ABS is standard. The brake rotors are large (32 x 1.26 front, 26 x 1.27 rear)(1) and vented for powerful braking performance. Premium, nonmetallic linings provide smooth, quiet braking.
Front Engine/Rear Trans.
A rear-mounted transmission creates more room for the driver and passenger. Hydraulic engine and transmission mounts help reduce vibration to the chassis.
Goodyear Eagle F1 Tires
Reducing Z06 weight by 23 pounds compared to coupe and convertible, these Supercar tires enhance wheel control by reducing unsprung weight. This also reduces rotational weight, which helps acceleration and braking. An asymmetric tread pattern helps improve both dry and wet traction. (The outside tread helps dry handling and the inside tread helps channel water.)
High-Strength Rear Axle
The Z06 rear axle is strengthened for increased durability. A process known as "shot peening" was employed to make the ring gear of the axle more robust. Shot peening involves shooting small, BB-like pellets at the areas of the ring gear where the bending stresses are highest. This works as a hardening system to the surface, and packs the structure of the metal itself to make it stronger and able to handle the increased torque output of the Z06.
Six-Speed Manual Trans.
In keeping with the sporting nature of the Z06, an automatic transmission is not available. The six-speed manual features gear ratios that enhance acceleration.
Power Steering Cooler
A cooler connected to the power steering system helps prevent the power steering fluid from overheating. Standard on Z06. Optional on coupe and convertible as part of the Z51 Performance Handling Package.
Precision Alignment
A four-wheel geometric machine at the end of the assembly line confirms that each Corvette is set to its optimum ride height. All caster, camber and toe alignments are completed to exact standards.
Standard Active Handling
Working in conjunction with a yaw-rate sensor, lateral accelerometer, other sensors, and the ABS and Traction Control, the standard Active Handling System assists the driver in maintaining control under a variety of driving circumstances.
Titanium Exhaust System
The unique-to-Z06 titanium mufflers and tailpipes reduce weight and are corrosion-resistant. Corvette was first in the industry to use titanium in the exhaust system of a mass-production vehicle. Benefits include reduced mass and higher strength than either aluminum or magnesium. Using titanium reduces exhaust system weight by almost 50 percent, compared with a conventional stainless-steel system.
Transmission Temp. Sensor
A temperature sensor is included on the Z06 manual transmission. It is designed to help safeguard the transmission from extremely high thermal stresses by alerting the driver should a "trans over temp" condition ever develop (for example, when competing in sanctioned competitive events).
Z06-Specific FE4 Suspension
A stronger, tighter, more controlled FE4 suspension is specifically tuned to the Z06. Stabilizer bar and spring rates are higher than those found in other 2003 Corvettes, and greater negative camber helps increase the tire contact patch in aggressive cornering situations on the racetrack. Significantly, Z06 maintains a ride that is appropriate for everyday street use.
